Jalisco has become the first state in Mexico to incorporate specialized personnel and canine units (binomios caninos) to support federal agricultural and health inspections at its two main international airports, including the Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport in Puerto Vallarta and the Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla airport in Guadalajara.
Implemented through the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER Jalisco) and the Agency for Health, Safety, and Agri-Food Quality (ASICA), this enhanced security protocol serves as a non-intrusive first line of defense to protect the state’s agricultural heritage and food supply. The strategy focuses on detecting, seizing, and destroying or returning restricted foreign products that pose sanitary risks.
Since its rollout, the initiative has led to the inspection of over 53,000 pieces of luggage, thousands of commercial and civil flights, and numerous incoming pets under the joint supervision of state agencies and the National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA). Authorities emphasize that these measures are vital for preventing the introduction of pests, diseases, and prohibited biological materials from regions with different sanitary conditions, ensuring both public safety and the continued stability of local ecosystems and agricultural production.
