Juárez, Miguel Blanco and the looting of the Sanctuary’s Treasure in San Juan de los Lagos

12

A historical episode from San Juan de los Lagos is once again drawing attention for its significance to local memory 📜
According to historical records, around 1858 Benito Juárez passed through San Juan de los Lagos and stayed at the Mesón de la Divina Providencia, located on Vicente Guerrero Street.

The historical account states that, after learning of the wealth kept in the Sanctuary of the Virgin of San Juan, General Miguel Blanco was sent to seize a significant amount of money from what was known as the Sanctuary’s Treasure ⛪
It is also mentioned that two carts full of gold coins were removed from inside the Cathedral, in addition to the looting and burning of the Virgin’s old main altar.

In the end, a signed document was supposedly left stipulating that the amount would be paid by the National Treasury when the opportunity arose; however, this payment was never made.

A powerful chapter in the history of San Juan that continues to be part of the religious, political and cultural memory of Los Altos de Jalisco.
