Security authorities in Jalisco reported an increase in drone overflights near the Puerto Vallarta prison, opening an investigation into the possible smuggling of drugs into the penitentiary.
The state Secretary of Public Security, Juan Pablo Hernández, indicated that the possibility of these devices being used to drop illicit substances cannot be ruled out, given their flight capabilities and the difficulty in detecting them.
According to official information, the increase in these incidents has been recorded in the last two months, following the riot that occurred on February 22 at the North Coast Regional Comprehensive Justice Center (CEINJURE), which resulted in the escape of 23 inmates.
State authorities reported that, following these events, one of the escapees was killed and five more were recaptured, leaving 17 still at large.
It was also acknowledged that a self-governance system operated within the prison, which would have facilitated the organization of the escape.
As part of the subsequent actions, security operations were implemented, and six inmates considered high-risk were transferred to the Puente Grande prison complex.
In addition, a joint operation with federal forces was carried out inside the prison, with the objective of dismantling groups that generate violence and illicit activities.
The Secretary of Security indicated that permanent reviews are being maintained and that the incorporation of aerial surveillance technology is being analyzed to counteract the use of drones in illegal activities.
Authorities emphasized that this practice represents a new challenge in terms of prison security, and therefore, monitoring strategies in the area will be strengthened.
