The Congress of the State of Jalisco rejected an initiative promoted by Morena party representatives that sought to allow children to change their gender identity before reaching the age of majority. The proposal failed to advance after a clear vote: 11 in favor, 22 against, and one abstention.
The legislators from the Citizens’ Movement party voted against the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to the comprehensive protection of children in Jalisco, emphasizing that decisions of this nature must be made with full legal and personal maturity, that is, upon reaching the age of majority.
During the debate, Morena representatives, such as Candelaria Ochoa, insisted that minors have the right to change their identity, a position rejected by the majority of the plenary session, who considered that the State must prioritize the best interests of the child and guarantee responsible, informed, and legally sound processes. With this vote, the Congress of Jalisco made it clear that any legal modification related to gender identity must be carried out only upon reaching the age of majority, marking a difference with the agenda promoted by Morena and establishing a precedent in the defense of children in the state.
