Submarine reported off Puerto Vallarta beach; this is known

This Friday, August 15, images and videos circulated on social media showing the presence of a submarine off a beach in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. The event went viral and captured the attention of those who witnessed it in person.

Shortly after curious people expressed their excitement online, a statement from the Mexican Navy, through the Regional Port Captain’s Office, circulated, announcing that the submarine was a Chilean Thomson submarine, which would remain anchored there until August 18 “for exclusively logistical reasons and not for commercial purposes.”

The text of Maritime Security Notice 077/2025 states that the vessel is anchored 1.39 kilometers southwest of the beach, in front of the Bay View Grand Condos complex, at the coordinates of Latitude 20°39’22.4″ N and Longitude 105°16’02” W.

Witnesses who released the images reported that the submarine suddenly appeared off Garza Blanca Beach, headed toward Nuevo Vallarta, and then headed toward the Puerto Vallarta Integrated Port Authority (API). The scene was surprising, as it is unusual to see this type of submersible in the region, especially on a typical day close to the weekend, when the area is packed with visitors to one of Mexico’s most attractive tourist destinations.
