Tequila and mezcal brands from Guanajuato triple; COFOCE seeks to export more

The director of the Coordinator for the Promotion of Foreign Trade (COFOCE), Luis Ernesto Rojas Ávila, announced that due to the collapse in the price of agave, and overproduction, the brands of mezcal and tequila from Guanajuato have tripled and three years ago there were 10 while today there are already up to 40 that have emerged.

Given this situation, the state official commented that COFOCE has drawn up a route so that these new brands of agave distillates can reach other countries, and reinforce the presence of these drinks from Guanajuato in the world.

“What we are doing as Guanajuato, mainly as COFOCE, is that we have developed an entire route for mezcal and tequila for internationalization, we are going to Foodex in Japan, we are going to the Macfrut fair, we are going to Miami in September and we are promoting the relationship with producers throughout the year,” he said.

Rojas Ávila stressed that the new brands of mezcal and tequila are not yet included in the export mechanisms because they have been on the market for a short time and also depend on their production.

He also indicated that the new brands of distilled beverages also face the barrier of paying taxes on their sales, as alcoholic beverages are subject to a special tax.

“What happens with distilled beverages is that alcoholic beverages are subject to an IEPS payment (special and indirect tax applied to the import and production of products and services that cause social harm), an insurance payment and a VAT payment, which if you add it up as a tax burden represents that for every 100 pesos that you sell your tequila, approximately 55 pesos go there,” he explained.

Finally, he explained that the export of distilled beverages produced in the state of Guanajuato is a good option for producers.

Currently, Guanajuato distilled beverages are already exported to just over 80 countries and as of July of this year, a total of 12 tequila brands reach other countries.
