About Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is situated along the Western Sierra Coast and is part of the Puerto Vallarta Metropolitan Zone. It is currently the second most populated area in the state of Jalisco. Founded on December 12, 1851, during the independent era, it was originally known as “Las Peñas.” The name “Puerto Vallarta” was adopted on June 5, 1918, in honor of Ignacio Luis Vallarta, a former governor of the state.

The growth of Puerto Vallarta began between 1980 and 1990, driven by the influx of both Mexican and foreign tourists. Initially, the area saw the construction of schools, followed by condominiums and residential areas.

In its early days, Puerto Vallarta served as a hub for loading and unloading supplies for mining companies. Families were engaged in agriculture, livestock, and commerce. Eventually, a port was opened for national navigation, paving the way for significant economic growth through fishing.

A Premier Tourist Destination

Over the years, Puerto Vallarta has gained popularity, becoming a sought-after location for film shoots and evolving into a first-class tourist destination. Today, it is highly appreciated by both national and international visitors for its unique charm and vibrant culture.
