San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has secured another Mexican budget airline route, as VivaAerobus announces nonstop flights from San Antonio to Guadalajara starting December 2. This expansion comes at a time when other carriers are scaling back their services in the Alamo City.
In contrast to the decline of air traffic from other airlines, VivaAerobus is increasing its presence in San Antonio with four weekly flights to Guadalajara. The carrier will join Volaris, another Mexican budget airline, in offering nonstop service between the two cities.
According to Jesus Saenz, Director of Airports at SAT, “Guadalajara is a popular destination for business travelers, tourists interested in exploring the birthplace of mariachi music, and individuals from our community who wish to visit friends and relatives.” This new route is part of VivaAerobus’ significant expansion plans, which include six new routes from Guadalajara starting this year, half of which are destined for US cities.
Meanwhile, other airlines have announced reductions in service at SAT. In June, Condor Airlines scaled back its direct transatlantic flights to Frankfurt from three times a week to twice weekly next summer. JetBlue also recently canceled flights from the Alamo City to Boston and New York City.
Despite this decline in air traffic from other carriers, Saenz remains optimistic about San Antonio’s growth prospects. “The more passengers choose to fly from SAT and support our airport, the more airlines take notice and expand their services,” he said. “We’re still growing, and we look forward to sharing more exciting news in the future.”
