Canelo Alvarez, Mexican boxing’s top star, will defend his undisputed super middleweight championship versus John Ryder on May 6 in his hometown, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.

John Ryder is of course a British professional boxer. He has held the WBO interim super-middleweight title since 2022, having previously held the WBA interim super-middleweight title in 2019.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be fighting once again in Mexico 12 years after his last fight in his hometown, Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Akron Stadium, Guadalajara, Jalisco

During the official announcement of his bout against John Ryder at Akron Stadium, “Canelo” said that even though he had options to fight elsewhere, he never doubted that he wanted to give his “countrymen “paisanos tapatíos” the opportunity to see him fight again.

“The first thing I told Enrique Alfaro (Jalisco’s Governor) when we talked about fighting here, is that I wanted people that can’t afford a ticket or people that can’t go to Las Vegas to watch my fights, can have the opportunity to see me fight here in Guadalajara, so the ticket price will be very affordable,” Saúl Alvarez said.

Promotor Eddie Hearn says the fight could’ve been had anywhere

Eddie Hearn, promoter for Matchroom Boxing explained that there were offers to have the fight against John Ryder in England, the Middle East, and the United States, but Canelo and Eddy Reynoso wanted the bout to take place in Mexico.

“I had offers to fight everywhere, but I never wavered,” Canelo expressed.

Canelo also mentioned that he always wanted to return to his homeland as a World Champion and the best boxer in the planet.
