Sofía Medeles (Ajijic, Jalisco.) – Warning about the consequences of the destruction of the Chapala hills for real estate purposes is part of the objective of a study that reveals the danger of excessive urbanization in the mountains, which in the future could generate landslides or “waterspouts” with the risk of serious damage or even human losses.

The study was presented by the group “Axixic Chimalli”, together with the doctor in criminal sciences, Raquel Gutiérrez Nájera, and the geographer Luis Valdivia Ornelas, who warned of the risks that exist when damaging the ecosystem. 

The file –which can be found in “Grupo Axixic Chimalli” on Facebook- includes the history, as well as the conditions and risks that the landslides and the damages they have caused in the last 50 years, both in San Juan Cosalá and Jocotepec in the town of Ajijic.

Noris Binet, a member, and collaborator of the group – which was created to demand the right to a healthy environment, both in the mountains and in Lake Chapala – shared that the study in its entirety is a technical report analyzing the why of different landslides over the years, which are related to urbanization, due to housing developments on mountain slopes and how they put the home users of such developments, as well as the population in general, at risk.

He also added that the purpose for which this study was carried out is to support and support the lawsuits brought by Dr. Raquel, which seek to stop all types of invasive construction in the mountains. 

“The doctor cannot come to the judge and only say that the construction stops, there is the reason for the study, evidence is needed to show that they are attacking, mainly with human rights, they do not guarantee safety to their users and not only They are affected by the lack of services, mainly water, as well as the risk of an allude ”stated Noris.

Semanario Laguna presented the initiative to residents throughout Ajijic, who were happy with the group’s action. “No one was doing anything other than expressing our disagreement with the developments on the slopes. I was happy that a group of inhabitants has put to work, and I hope that the construction in the mountains can be stopped, ”said one of the interviewees.

Finally, Noris commented that this study serves to educate and make people aware of the imbalance in the environment that causes the expansion of the urban area to the mountains, and emphasized that progress is not about destroying, if not about be sustainable.
