PUERTO VALLARTA, Jalisco. After an extremely complicated year, where hundreds of establishments closed their doors permanently and others had to change their business or cut staff, the merchants of Puerto Vallarta say they are hopeful May 2021 be a better year.
Despite the fact that there is no certainty of what will happen with the pandemic, especially in the imminent second wave of the coronavirus, merchants have their hopes for the return of tourism, especially internationally.
“What is heard at least here with colleagues, is that it will improve a little, due to the capacity and reservations that are being given in hotels and cruises that apparently in February or March would be returning,” said a merchant from the downtown area of the city, who considers that with this panorama “it looks a little better” the beginning of the year. “But now it does not taste good,” he added.
And it is that the international panorama is uncertain, although the vaccine would begin to be distributed as of this year, for it to reach the total population it will take months and that is why for many traders the future is uncertain.
“Well, now I do hope so, I don’t know, I don’t know how it will be … that it will happen … we will see things,” said one more merchant from the city who comes to his establishment every day to earn a living.
Although there are no official figures yet, it is estimated that between 8 and 15 percent of the businesses in Puerto Vallarta closed permanently and a little more changed their direction or is still analyzing whether to continue open or close temporarily.
