Family members seek help locating Daniel Garay, a businessman missing in Guadalajara.

Having received no news of him since he was last seen leaving a family meal last Sunday, relatives of Daniel Garay Tanamachi are seeking assistance in locating him. The 44-year-old man was last spotted in security footage from the apartment building where he resides, located in the Country Club neighborhood of Guadalajara. Relatives suspect he may have been kidnapped, as last Monday, both Daniel’s father and a friend received text messages demanding 40,000 pesos to “support” an investment project.

Daniel’s cousin recounted that they had left a family barbecue on Sunday, after which Daniel returned to his apartment around 9:00 p.m. Minutes later—as captured in the security footage—he welcomed a visitor into his home. They subsequently left the apartment and the building in Daniel’s car; that moment marked the last time he was seen.

Daniel works in the importation and sale of products sourced from China. “Our theory is that the individual in question posed as a potential client for his business. They made him some sort of offer that he found appealing, which is why he let them into his apartment. He sometimes makes a habit of meeting clients in his building to discuss business,” his cousin explained.

“We believe this person used that ruse to get close to Daniel. None of his friends know who this individual is,” he added.

Upon entering Daniel’s apartment last Monday, his cousin discovered that the television and lights had been left on, and that there were two half-finished beers sitting out—indications that Daniel had planned to return home that very Sunday night. A formal missing person report has since been filed with the State Prosecutor’s Office, where authorities are treating the case as a potential kidnapping due to the monetary demands.

“The person involved in Daniel’s disappearance is in possession of his phone and his car. The car has already been reported stolen; these individuals took everything,” his cousin noted.

“Daniel is a hardworking individual. He is an entrepreneur who imports goods from China to sell locally; he really isn’t the type of person involved in anything shady. He’s just a normal guy,” he added. Daniel Garay is the subject of a missing person alert issued by the National Search Commission (CNB). At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a turquoise shirt, navy blue trousers, and sneakers.
