Tourist dies after falling into the sea following parachute failure in Puerto Vallarta

A tourist from Guadalajara died after parachuting from a small plane.

The young man was identified as José Fernando, between 27 and 29 years old, who had just booked a parachute jump with Skydive, a company that offers this extreme activity.

Rescue personnel explained that the young man jumped from the aircraft from a considerable height around 1:30 p.m., but his parachute failed to open, and he died almost instantly upon impact with the water.

Despite the rapid deployment of Civil Protection (PC) vessels from Puerto Vallarta, the man was found floating lifeless in the sea off the Plaza de Oro hotel, in the northern part of the city.

Misael López, director of PC, said that the case is now under investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Jalisco State Attorney General’s Office.

“We arrived to provide first aid, but we couldn’t rescue him. What I can confirm is that he fell from a parachute—I don’t really know the origin of the aircraft—and he had a problem with the parachute,” he explained.

This is the first death to occur during this Holy Week holiday period, which began at 10:00 a.m. this Thursday in this city and later in the afternoon in the neighboring municipality of Bahía de Banderas.
