The state of Jalisco has now surpassed Chihuahua in the number of measles cases, becoming the state with the highest incidence of this virus nationwide.
Although a recent downward trend has been observed in the state, the outbreak that began in late 2015 continues to significantly affect the health of the population of Jalisco.
To date, Jalisco has registered a cumulative total of 4,594 cases, exceeding the 4,527 reported in Chihuahua.
Of the total number of cases in Jalisco, 3,930 correspond to the year 2016 alone, representing the highest number of cases this year in the entire country. In contrast, Chihuahua has shown a clear slowdown with only 32 cases registered in 2016.
Nationally, the epidemiological report of March 11, 2016, reports:
13,132 confirmed cases nationwide.
33,430 probable cases and 5,545 still under investigation.
34 deaths associated with the outbreak, 4 of which occurred in Jalisco.
576 new infections registered in the last five days nationwide, indicating that transmission remains active.
The virus has reached all 32 states of the country.
The virus is now present in all 32 states of the Republic and in 432 municipalities, demonstrating significant territorial spread. A geographic shift in the outbreak has been observed: while the spread is slowing in the north of the country, the virus has spread to the west, central, and southern regions. After Jalisco and Chihuahua, the states with the most cases are Chiapas (831), Mexico City (530), and Michoacán (365).
The most vulnerable group in this outbreak is children between 1 and 9 years old, with the highest incidence rate occurring in children under one year old.
