Demolition work began today on the La Desembocada bridge, located in the rural area of this port city, after it was damaged by the burning of cars on its structure on February 22, in reaction to the arrest and death of Nemesio Oseguera “El Mencho” in Tapalpa, Jalisco, the Puerto Vallarta city council reported.
According to official information, members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) who clashed with Mexican Army personnel in the area set fire to more than half a dozen vehicles on the bridge, causing irreversible damage. A temporary road has been opened to ensure access from the port to surrounding municipalities, including Talpa de Allende, Mascota, and Guadalajara.
Governor Pablo Lemus said the bridge will cost at least 80 million pesos, while David Zamora Bueno, Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP), pointed out that the existing bridge was built in 1994, meaning it is 32 years old, and suffered damage to its lower chords, rendering the concrete unusable.
He emphasized that construction of the new bridge will be completed by the end of July.
