The Tears of Llorona: A Tequila of Unparalleled Excellence

In the world of spirits, few products have managed to attain perfection. But according to the 2025 World Spirits Championships, one tequila has risen above the rest: Tears of Llorona No. 3, an extra añejo expression from ultra-premium brand Tears of Llorona.

This small-batch masterpiece earned a staggering 96 out of 100 possible points from the Beverage Testing Institute (BevTest), a renowned organization that provides expert-led sensory evaluations for various beverages. The BevTest panelists were blown away by the complexity and nuance of this tequila, praising its vibrant, decadent flavor profile and lingering finish.

Tears of Llorona No. 3 is crafted by master distiller Germán González Gorrochotegui at the Tequileña distillery (NOM 1146). To create this exceptional spirit, Gorrochotegui uses a combination of barrels seasoned with scotch, brandy, and sherry, rather than the industry standard ex-bourbon. This attention to detail results in a rich, sophisticated sipping experience that is reminiscent of fine Scotch or Cognac.

As an extra añejo tequila, Tears of Llorona No. 3 must spend at least three years in oak, but this expression matures for upwards of five years. The extended aging process allows the liquid to extract deep flavors from the barrels, resulting in a long and lush finish that is both butterscotch-like and cinnamon-spiced.

The product’s name refers to a Latin-American ghost story about a grieving woman who wanders the land, shedding tears for her lost children. This tale represents the “tears of the angels” – agave spirit that evaporates from the barrel during maturation. It is estimated that up to 50% of the liquid can vanish after five years in this climate, highlighting the care and patience required to produce such a exceptional tequila.

While Tears of Llorona No. 3 comes at an elevated cost (retailing for $230 per bottle), it’s worth noting that the product is also offered in a unique 1-liter decanter. For those who appreciate fine spirits, this may be a worthwhile investment. As one can imagine, after sampling this 96-point belter, the only tears to speak of will be your own when the glass is empty.
