Why did the Los Altos Norte area become so dangerous?

The Los Altos region of Jalisco is facing a security challenge that has put the region in the crosshairs of state and federal authorities. But how did it happen?

For at least four years, rampant violence in the municipality of Teocaltiche has forced residents of this town in the Altos Norte region, known for its strong agricultural and livestock production, to flee the area.

The feud between two factions of organized crime (Jalisco and Sinaloa) has generated a wave of violence that the previous administration claimed did not exist.

In the new administration, Pablo Lemus has said he will seek rapprochement with the federal government to restore peace to the residents of Teocaltiche.

Recently, the security commissioner, the government secretary, and the former mayoral candidate for the Citizens’ Movement were murdered. Eight police officers and a driver were also detained; four of them were found dead.

Seeking to Solve the Security Problem

With an investment of more than one billion pesos, the Government of Jalisco presented an ambitious comprehensive care plan for the municipalities of Teocaltiche, Villa Hidalgo, and Encarnación de Díaz, located in the state’s Altos region, a region historically plagued by violence, forced migration, and a lack of infrastructure.

The program includes roadworks, hospitals, schools, sports and cultural venues, as well as social programs, a boost to the countryside, support for the local economy, and strengthening security. In short, it is a multisectoral intervention that seeks to thoroughly reactivate public and economic life in these three municipalities in the Altos Norte region of Jalisco.

“Let them know that they are not alone,” said Alberto Esquer Gutiérrez, Chief of Staff of the State, while leading a meeting with municipal authorities and residents of the region, held in the Auditorium of the Teocaltiche House of Culture.
