Puerto Vallarta, closer to Guadalajara and with less danger, is the promise of a short route to the tourist destination of Jalisco that has been delivered in installments and in sections, extending its total operation.

The Guadalajara – Puerto Vallarta short road is a project that has been going on for just over 10 years and was designed to connect the capital of Jalisco with the most famous beach tourist destination in the Entity, in a short period of time, although with an increase in toll rates. But the work has had some difficulties that have delayed its complete start-up.

On the short route from Guadalajara to Puerto Vallarta, progress has been delivered in sections and deadlines. For example, the most recent was the one that the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) put into operation at the beginning of April 2023 and which runs from the La Florida – La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Interchange, of 30.8 kilometers, which will allow you to travelers save 40 minutes on their journey.

But in addition to this last one, there are four others, to give a total of five sections to form the short Guadalajara – Puerto Vallarta route. Here we take a look at each one, their details and the status they have in their operation:

1. Jala – Compostela (in operation)

The first section of the short road came into operation in April 2017 and runs for 54 kilometers between Jala and Compostela.

The highway works began in 2012.

2. Compostela – Las Varas (pending)

Despite the new sections, and even taking them as a path, there is one route that is inevitable for drivers who want to arrive on the toll highway towards Puerto Vallarta, it is the route between Compostela to Las Varas, in Nayarit, a complicated area which requires entry into a mountainous area full of curves and only two lanes, one per road.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport recalled that work on the section from Compostela to Las Varas will be completed at the beginning of 2024, that is, in January, according to estimates. This road is made up of 31 kilometers and has had setbacks in its work due to the release of rights of way and obtaining environmental permits.

3. El Capomo – La Florida (in operation)

Almost a year ago, in December 2022, the 23.6-kilometer El Capomo – La Florida route came into operation, which connects Las Varas with Entronque 692, an area of important tourist destinations, with the Florida Entronque, which makes it possible for 2,700 vehicles a reduction of 15 minutes; five communities benefit.

4. La Florida – La Cruz de Huanacaxtle (in operation)

On March 1, the SICT put into operation the Entronque La Florida – Entronque La Cruz de Huanacaxtle section, 30.8 kilometers long, of the new La Varas-Puerto Vallarta Highway, which will allow travelers to save 40 minutes on their journey.

Between the sections El Capomo – La Florida and La Florida – La Cruz de Huanacaxtle there are 54.4 kilometers that are in operation, which allows users a reduction of 55 minutes in their route. But it also increases the cost for travelers as these are toll sections.

5. San Vicente – Puerto Vallarta Airport (pending)

Currently, another section of 32.2 kilometers is under construction, which will reduce the transfer time by 25 minutes, which will connect the San Vicente Interchange directly with the Puerto Vallarta International Airport.
