The meeting industry is not the one that generates the most tourists to the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (ZMG), nor is Mexico City the main generator of visitors to the capital of Jalisco.
Clarifying some “cliches” or myths that prevail about the tourism industry in the city, the director of the Guadalajara Convention and Visitors Bureau (OFVC), Gustavo Staufert, indicated that weekend tourism represents 52% of the total of visitors to this destination, while Michoacán is the state from which the largest number of tourists come.
Staufert Buclón clarified that it is also not true that Michoacán visitors visit Guadalajara only from entry to exit, since, he said, 40% of them stay in this capital for more than three nights.
Although he recognized that the meetings industry is very important for the city since it represents 28% of tourism, while on a national scale it is around 19%, the director of the OFVC stressed that it is not the only or the largest generator of visitors to Guadalajara.
“It was said that Guadalajara was eminently a city of exhibitions and that the meeting industry was Expo Guadalajara. Expo represents 40% of the total meeting industry, but it is the hotels that generate the largest meeting industry”, he mentioned.
Gustavo Staufert released other statistics such as the fact that 40% of visitors who arrive in the city do so by road and that in 2021, 20% of total hotel revenues in the Metropolitan Area corresponded to Airbnb.
“Of the lodging platforms in the city, Airbnb represents 99%; in 2021 he made 38% more income than in 2019, in the midst of a pandemic, ”he commented.
Through an agreement between the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente, the OFVC and the Jalisco Hotel Association, the institutions will have accurate market information and tourism trends in the destination, which will allow decision-making in the entity’s tourism industry.
