Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán achieve historic tourist arrivals this summer

Faced with the strong arrival of travelers from the US, the Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta airports had their best July in history. Mazatlán also received more visits than before the pandemic

Recognized for being one of the main beach centers in the country, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, and Mazatlán began the summer season with the largest arrival of tourists in their history.

This is largely due to the fact that Mexico continues to take advantage of its status as a close and open destination without restrictions for tourists from the United States, according to a recent report by Grupo Empresarial Estrategia (Gemes).

Los Cabos se consolida como destino ideal a nivel mundial.

Los Cabos airport received a total of 592 thousand passengers last month, when the summer vacation period began, data from Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) show.

This is its best July in history, after serving almost four times more travelers than in the same period last year when only 168,000 tourists arrived and some restrictions were beginning to be lifted due to Covid-19.

The recent data also exceeds the 533 thousand travelers who arrived in July 2019, before the pandemic, and the 510 thousand who entered in the same month of 2018.

For its part, the Puerto Vallarta airport served a total of 457,000 passengers last month, five times more than a year earlier and it was also its best start to summer in history, according to the recent GAP report.

The majority of tourists who arrive by plane to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta come from the United States, where the authorities continue to request a negative test of contagion of Covid-19 to all passengers who intend to travel to that country.

Meanwhile, Canada reopened on July 5 international flights for people who are vaccinated and who meet certain conditions issued by the government of that nation.

Gemes warns about the possible fragility in the recovery of arrivals to Mexican destinations since the good results are supported only by tourism from the United States, given the current circumstances that have kept other important places out of reach of Americans.

“This situation, which has clearly benefited the country, could be temporary due to increased risk of contagion (as could be happening in Cancun and Los Cabos) or due to greater openness to competition, mainly in the Caribbean, the European Union. , the United Kingdom and Canada ”, says the consultant.

Considered the Pearl of the Pacific, Mazatlán is another destination that also receives more tourists than before the pandemic, but, unlike Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, this beach center serves mostly national visitors.

The Mazatlán airport received a total of 99 thousand passengers last month and it is also its best July in history, according to information from Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA).

This figure is equivalent to more than double the arrivals of a year ago, and exceeds the 90 thousand registered in July 2019 and the 84 thousand of the same month of 2018.

However, given the growing number of Covid-19 infections, the mayor of Mazatlán, Luis Guillermo Benítez, said that he formalized the obligation to carry the vaccination certificate to those who are in public places, as of August 2.

“We are going to demand that all citizens to go to any public place must bring their vaccination card against Covid-19. Many are not wanting to go to be vaccinated and they are partly the cause that this continues ”, informed at the end of last month.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) pointed out that by 2025 it expects the number of passengers transported in Mexico to be 10% higher than that registered in 2019, mentioning that it foresees a rapid recovery in passenger traffic levels. , since it is the only country in the world that never closed its borders.
