The aid that the cartels dispense is diluted compared to the destruction they cause. It is a propaganda war on social networks. The same they filter a video distributing aid, than beheading a rival.

In Sinaloa, for example, there have been up to four demonstrations in favor of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán

In 2015, when José and his three brothers found out that El Chapo had escaped from prison, they jumped out of their seat and screamed with joy.

” El Chapo escaped. He’s the best!” Celebrated JosĂ©, 18, and an admirer of the drug lord, whose real name is JoaquĂn Guzmán Loera.

JosĂ©, a merchant, was so excited that to celebrate he attended a march through the streets of Culiacán, the capital of Guzmán Loera’s home state. He carried a banner that read “Chapo, thank you for taking care of us from kidnappings, robberies and fees. We support you”.

Although there is little doubt about the damage that Guzmán caused, for many Mexicans, he is an unusual combination of Robin Hood and tycoon, a cause for jubilation, an object of respect and even reverence, given his inexhaustible ability to outwit the Mexican government.

Why do people admire it? “Because he is a living legend. It’s like Al Capone, like Luciano, like Scarface. It’s like a television character, only this one is real, ” said a villager.
