Odilón Cortés Linares, the state coordinator of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), reported that according to the 2020 Population and Housing Census, corresponding to the Basic Questionnaire, the population in Puerto Vallarta increased in the last ten years by 36,158 people.

This means that in 2010 this tourist destination had 255,681 inhabitants and now has 291,839.

“The median age of Puerto Vallarta is exactly the same as at the state level, so in 2010 it was 25 years old and currently it is 29 years old. Regarding the average annual growth rate between these two years, 2010 and 2020 is 1.4% per year ”.

It is worth mentioning that this Tuesday, INEGI released the results of the 2020 Population and Housing Census, which offers information on the size, structure, and distribution of the population, as well as its main socioeconomic and cultural characteristics.

The period for the survey of the main census exercise that takes place in Mexico every decade was from March 2 to 27, 2020, and for the first time, it was conducted with mobile computing devices, in addition to capturing information via the internet and by telephone as complementary methods.

In this sense, Cortés Linares mentioned that the census showed that the total population in Jalisco is 8 million 348 thousand 151 inhabitants. Of these, 4 million 249 thousand 696 are women (50.9%) and 4 million 098 thousand 455 are men (49.1%).

“One million more inhabitants have been incorporated into the state of Jalisco every 10 years, in such a way that at this moment we have 8 million 348 thousand 151 inhabitants, which is why Jalisco occupies the third place nationally by the amount of population and this means that it is below the State of Mexico and Mexico City and in 2010 Veracruz was in third place and now it is Jalisco who occupies this position ”.

He said that by municipalities, Zapopan is the most populated with 1 million 476 thousand 491 inhabitants, while Santa María del Oro is the least populated, with 1,815 inhabitants

Likewise, according to the results of the 2020 Census, 64 out of every 100 people are 12 years old and are economically active. The economic participation rate is 76.9 in men and 52.0 in women.

He highlighted that the illiteracy rate fell from 6.4% in 2000, to 4.4% in 2010 and to 2.9% in 2020. Conversely, the average level of schooling shows an increasing trend: 7.5 years in 2000, 8.8 in 2010 and 9.9 in 2020.

It is worth mentioning that in 2020 there are 2 million 330 thousand 706 inhabited private homes. In 2000 the figure was 1 million 392 thousand 775 homes and in 2010 it was 1 million 830 thousand 334.

The average number of occupants per dwelling maintains a decreasing trend, from 4.5 occupants in 2000, to 4.0 in 2010 and to 3.6 in 2020.

Between 2010 and 2020, the availability of cell phones in households grew from 75.4 to 91.7%, internet, from 27.0 to 61.8%, computers or laptops from 36.2 to 44.5%, and landlines dropped from 55.3 to 43.4 percent.
