Inhabitants of six colonies from this municipality, carried out a total blockade at the height of the San Pablo crossing of the San Cristóbal de Las Casas-Teopisca road section, in response to the demand that the authorities provide the necessary attention to the protection demands of the environment.
At 8:15 a.m. on Monday, around 500 people installed the total blockade, placing stones, sticks, and large units on the road, this in order to pressure the authorities to give immediate attention to the invasion of wetlands and ecological reserves.
In an interview, they demanded the immediate suspension of any invasion, filling, or construction within the María Eugenia wetlands polygon, which is affecting the entire San Cristóbal de Las Casas Valley basin.
“We demand a halt to the exploitation of the properties of public utility and environmental benefit that the city requires, promotion of the protection and sustainable management of the ecological reserves that exist in San Cristóbal, such as the Quenvó Cixtitali, Gertrudi Duby, Santa Cruz reserves and banks of rivers and streams ”, they asserted.
They also demanded the suspension and closure of the stone material banks that do not have an authorization, as well as the environmental restoration of sites impacted in the last 40 years and the immediate installation of the Committee for Territorial Ecological Planning and the Urban Development Advisory Council.
